Name: Katrina Laboucan

Occupation: Street Vendor

Katrina is 49-years old and currently lives with her partner and one of her two children in Burnaby. She worked for a maid service for private homes but was unable to continue when she was diagnosed with breast cancer 2 years ago. Accessing EI took over 3 months and she couldn’t afford rent during this time so she became homeless. She is now on disability and works as a street vendor selling calendars during the winter for extra income. She wants to go back to work but is no longer able to work as a cleaner and has not received any employment retraining.

We support raising disability rates and providing meaningful education and employment supports for those able to work. An income of $906 per month ($10,782 annually) is significantly below the poverty line, and housing costs are a significant challenge.

“[The government needs to] put rates up. And provide housing so people can get off the street and into homes. Move people into real homes, and give them a real life.”
